Millennium Park Foundation Commitment to Accessibility
Last updated: October 16, 2025
Millennium Park Foundation is committed to ensuring that Millennium Park is a welcoming, open, and inclusive space for all visitors. Just as we strive to make the park physically accessible to everyone, we are equally dedicated to creating an online experience that is inclusive and easy to use for people with a wide range of abilities.
This includes visitors who use assistive technologies to access online information, as well as individuals with cognitive or digital-literacy challenges.
A key part of this commitment is the implementation of the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA, which we refer to in this statement as “the Guidelines.” Beyond these Guidelines, our goal is to meet the broader usability needs of people who rely on assistive technology.
How We Are Doing This
The Guidelines are an internationally accepted standard for digital accessibility. We use them to evaluate our current website and digital services and to guide improvements that better serve visitors with disabilities.
Our team has partnered with experts to review our digital platforms, set measurable goals, and create an action plan to meet these goals as we update and enhance our website.
Steps We’ve Taken So Far
Professional Accessibility Audit: We commissioned an external audit of our website and received specific recommendations to align with the Guidelines.
Key Accessibility Improvements:
Text Equivalents: Ensuring images have appropriate alternative text for screen reader users.
Site Structure: Using proper heading levels and structure to support assistive technologies.
Keyboard Access: Enhancing navigation and interaction for users who rely on keyboard-only input.
Magnification: Ensuring key workflows and content remain usable with screen magnification.
Color Contrast: Improving text legibility through sufficient contrast between text and background.
Sustainable Design: We’ve embedded accessibility checks into our design and review processes to ensure future updates follow the Guidelines.
How We Make Accessibility Sustainable
Accessibility and usability are built into all new features and improvements to our website.
Our design process prioritizes inclusive principles from the very beginning.
Development teams follow consistent accessibility standards when creating or updating features.
Quality assurance includes testing with assistive technologies such as screen readers and high-contrast displays.
Automated accessibility testing is used to maintain compliance as our website evolves.
Ongoing staff training ensures our team has the knowledge and tools to make informed accessibility decisions.
Continuous Improvement
We are proud of the progress we’ve made—but we know there is more to do. Over the next year, we plan to:
Collaborate with testers who have lived experience with disabilities to gather valuable feedback and recommendations.
Work with park visitors and community partners to identify specific accessibility challenges and address them.
Expand language support to enhance usability for non-English speakers.
Implement additional ARIA labels and accessibility attributes to improve assistive technology interactions.
Refine color contrast and font scaling to support users with low vision.
We are committed to ongoing accessibility improvements to ensure that our website is welcoming and user-friendly for everyone.
About Third-Party Content
Some areas of our website may include tools or content from third-party providers. While we cannot control or correct issues with external content, we make every effort to share accessibility concerns with the respective creators to encourage improvements.
